Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) is an important disease worldwide widespread caused by the larval stage of Echnococcus granulosus (Cestoda, Taeniidae) which represents a considerable problem for public health and the economy in many part of the world (Scala et al., 2004).In Italy, CE is endemic and the higher prevalence in domestic animals (sheep, cattle) has been recorded in southern regions and islands (Sicily and Sardinia). The aim of this study was to investigate on Cystic Echinococcosis (CE) in cattle, in order to integrate and update the available epidemiological information giving a further contribution to the control of this serious health problem. Data obtained are in agreement with those reported in the national literature confirming a chronic trend of the disease. In accordance with the biological characteristics of E. granulosus, no statistically significant differences were detected between prevalnces calculated in the two years (2009 and 2010) in different geographical areas of the country, confirming a steady trend of the infestation and the complexity in controlling the diseases. The survey has contributed to expand the epidemiological information on CE in cattle Italy. The correct running of the national bovine registry allowed recovering reliable and necessary information, previously not available, for the CE studying in Italy. Once again slaughterhouse has proved to be an important place to understanding the epidemiological situations of this significant but neglected disease.
