Based on the differentiation approach to rural development research, Russia's rural areas have been typified by their demographic performance, infrastructure, environment conditions and agriculture level. There were used the indicators as follows: population increment in 2005-2006, rural population density, rural income, number of social security establishments per a given number of residents, technical level of farming, profitability, environment pollution per 1 sq. km etc. The four types of regions have been identified: favourable regions; favourable peri-urban areas with mixed rural economy (the Moscow region, the Leningrad region); regions with depressive zones (the Non-Black Soil region, Ural); regions with unfavourable climate and underdeveloped (the Northern European region, the Far East). The above types have been divided into 9 subtypes. The development measures encompass diversification of rural economy, self-governing, small business encouragement etc.
