Rabbit breeding has long tradition in Slovakia. First breeding organization was found in the year 1923 in Holíč. There are two main types of rabbit breeding - for production purposes (meat, skin, fur) and purebred rearing (exhibition). Nowadays, purebred rabbit population in Slovakia consists of 49 breeds, including many colour varieties. The national rabbit breeds arose out of the fixation of specific genetic traits in fur colour, and type and body shape in consequence of mutation and combination. Rabbit breed recordings are kept by means of eFabis world wide data basis, which includes all breeds of farm animals in the FAO countries. The coordinator of rabbit breeding is the Slovak Union of Small Animal Breeders. Generally there can be observed slight increase in the number of animals, but restriction of breed variability in the country.
