This project investigated the wood characteristics and pulping potential of Aquilaria crassna in Vietnam, to determine if pulping is a suitable alternative to its current use in oil distilling. Ten year old, Aquilaria carssna were sourced from plantations in three ecological zones of Ba Vi - Ha noi, Huong Khe - Ha Tinh and Tien Phuoc - Quang Nam provinces. The weed properties of the samples showed that the wood density was very very low, fluctuating from 282.89 to 329.13kg/m3. The wood fibre size was short with length between 0.74 mm and 0.92mm, the fibre width was measured at between 27.5um and 38.3 um, this gave fibre length to fibre width ratios (1/r) between 23.23 and 27.55 times. The cellulose content of the wood samples was greater than 50%, while the content of lignin and other solid compounds was low (lignin : 24- 25% and other solid compounds : 19-21%) . Pulp productivity of Aquilaria crassna after being bleached was very low, especially for the Aquilaria crassna planted in huong Khe (Ha Tinh) and Tien Phuong (Quang Nam) where the productivity was less than 43%, in Ba Vi (Ha Noi) is higher than and achieve 46.7% . The whiteness of wood pulp from Aquilaria crassna was high, it is between 87.1 to 87.9% ISO, this is higher than pulp produced from Acacia hybrids. The´indicators of pulping property; was lower for the aquilaria crassna than for pulp from Acacia hybrids. The quality of pulp after being bleached is low and oly achieved 60-80% of what could be achieved from the same volume of Acacia hybrids. Although it is possible to produce pulp from Aquilaria crassna, but the quality is lower than pulp from Acacia hybrid.
