This study on inbreeding was based on the analysis of 140 pedigrees of the Bosnian mountain horse breed. Specifically, the study consisted from the analysis of 94 pedigrees from the horse farm Borike in Bosnia and Herzegovina; 27 pedigrees from the horse farm Gorski Kotar in Croatia and 19 pedigrees from the horse farm Planido in Slovenia. 111 horses were inbred with inbreeding coefficient of Fx>0 (Wright) and 29 h were not inbred (Fx=0). Total inbreeding coefficient was 1-7 joint ancestors. Blood line “Miško” consisted of eight Pepinier-studs with 157 joint ancestors while the blood line “Barut” consisted of nine Pepinier-studs with 140 joint ancestors, making up a total of 297 joint ancestor studs. The mares had 81 joint ancestors originating from 8 blood lines. On average, inbreeding coefficient in studs of the blood line “Miško” varied between 0.58 and 12.34%, while the average for the complete “Miško” blood line was 3.96%. On the other hand, inbreeding coefficient in studs of the blood line “Barut” was significantly lower and varied between 0.39% and 2.8%. The exceptions were three incestuous mating of stud 58 “Barut” XVII. General coefficient of this line’s inbreeding was 1.79%. For both “Miško” and “Barut” lines the average was 2.93%. The total percentage for mares was lower, varying from 0.29 to 1.90% with the average percentage of 1.60%. The total average for 111 inbred horses was 9.13%, varying from 0.98 to 29.92%. The total breeding strategy in these horse farms was developed by predominantly using studs with specific characteristics. These characteristics included choosing studs with a higher number of offspring and whose external features and types could be closely followed when intending to breed heavy load horse. Due to small and enclosed population inbreeding was more inevitable than planned.
