SEASONAL AND BREED-RELATED FEATURES OF BLOOD PHAGOCYTIC ACTIVITY IN GOATS AND BUCKS | Сезонни и породни особености на фагоцитната активност при кози и пръчове
2010
Semerdzhiev, V., Thracian University, Stara Zagora (Bulgaria)
The investigations were performed in 2005-2006. The blood phagocytic activity was investigated in six goats from each of the following breeds: Bulgarian Dairy breed - BDB, Toggenburg and Anglo-Nubian breeds reared in the Institute of Mountain Stockbreeding and Agriculture Troyan; BDB goats reared at the Experimental Farm of the Trakia University – Stara Zagora, as well as local crosses reared in Bogomilovo, region of Stara Zagora and Anevo, region of Karlovo. Also, samples were obtained from 6 BDB, Toggenburg and Anglo-Nubian bucks or the total number of investigated animals was 163 goats and 72 bucks at the age of 3–4 years. The phagocytic activity was determined through 2 parameters: phagocytosis percentage – PI % phagocytosis and phagocytic number - PN. PI was determined as a ratio of phagocytized leukocytes and the total leukocyte counts, multiplied by 100. PN was calculated as the number of bacteria, phagocytized by one leukocyte. The highest PI in studied goats was detected in summer - 80.97 0.867%, and the lowest – in winter 78.53 0.801%. A tendency towards highest average PN in spring was noted - 1.416 0.020 with gradual decrease during the following seasons with lowest values in winter - 1.373 0.020. There was a trend for lowest PI in bucks in spring and highest – in the summer - 81.11 1.364%. Phagocytic numbers in bucks was high in spring, decreased in summer and autumn, and was the highest in winter - 1.449 0.027. The phagocytic activity in the individual goat and bucks breeds did not change uniformly throughout the seasons.
