Four soil horizons of a meadow cinnamonic soil (Gleyic Luvisol) were analysed for the lipid biomarker pool. The GC/MS analysis of the lipid fraction showed that lipid signatures were dominated by alkanes (C17 – C33), alkanoic acids (C6 – C18) with minor contribution of C18 acids in the upper Ah horizon and n-alkanols (C14 – C32) maximizing at C26 in the Ah horizon and C22 in the lower depths. Carbon Preference Index (CPI) for alkanes decreased from 2.4 – 2.8 in the upper A horizons to 1.4 – 1.6 in the lower G horizon. Lipid sources show that the bacterial contribution increases downward the soil profile as shown by the alkane, fatty acids and n-alkanol distributions, while the upper A horizons reflect the contribution from grass vegetation.
