Bulgaria is a traditional fruit producer and exporter, but after the agrarian reform had been carried out this sector is beginning to lose ground and is being transformed into an importing one. With the accession of Bulgaria to the EU, under the conditions of a common market, new challenges and issues arose. The first group of problems is related to the comparatively low level of production and competitiveness, and the second one is connected with the different pace at which the separate branches are developed and modernized under the influence of the EU CAP. Practically, the direct payments stimulate the development of extensive crops which are grown on big areas. The financial support for the intensive crops is insufficient and their production has been decreased to such a degree that it cannot meet the consumption on the internal market. The purpose of the present study is to analyze the special features of the fruit market in Bulgaria and to reveal the prospectives of its development. In order to achieve this purpose it is necessary to fulfill the following tasks: Analyzing the status, trends and problems of the fruit production development. Making an assessment of the internal and international fruit market. Outlining the directions for the increase in the market share of fruit, produced in Bulgaria on the internal and external markets.
