Infected potatoes, with blackleg and soft rot symptoms, were collected from fields and storages during 2004 and 2005. After culturing infected tissues, fifty pect1olytic erwinias were isolated and purified. A great diversity was detected among strains. Isolated strains showed four phena, based on phenotypic similarities. The first phenon, eight strains, identified as Pectobacterium chrysanthemi. The strains of second phenon (22 strains) had the most similarity to Pectobacterium carotovorum susp. carotovorum. The third phenon (13 strains) were belong to Pectobacterium carotovorum susp. atrosepticum. A diversity was found among strains of each phenon, too. The last phenon did not correlate with differential tables. They were identified as intermediate strains among Pectobacterium chrysanthemi and Pectobacterium carotovorum susp. atrosepticum and Pectobacterium carotovorum susp. betavascularum. Atypical strains are probably members of a new species or subspecies.
