Evaluation of agronomic managements for enhancing lentil yield at farmer fields in Karkheh River Basin under dryland conditions

Average lentil productivity in Iran is 457 kg/ha that is less than half of average lentil productivity in the world. Low productivity is due to uses of local varieties which have low yield potential, and poor agronomic practices applied by the farmer such as broadcast sowing, use of furrow turning plough (Moldboard plow) for covering the seed after sowing, low seed rate, about 85 seeds/m2 and late planting in spring. Objective of this study was evaluations of agronomic managements for enhancing lentil yield in Karkheh River Basin. The experiments were conducted in split plot with two replications (regions) at Merak (Kermanshah province) and Honam (Lorestan Province) under dryland conditions in 2005-06 and 2006-07. Conventional method and new methods were considered as Main plot. Subplot was three improved varieties (Gachsaran , FLIP 92-12 and ILL6037) along with local check that will be planted in 2500 m2. Varieties were planted by planter with suitable seed rate (200 plant/ m2) and date of planting (autumn planting), also weeds were controlled by chemical or mechanical. But in conventional methods, agronomic practices were conducted on the basis current procedure, which used by farmers. Data was recorded for number of days to emergence, 50% flowering, and maturity, plant type, reaction to fuzarium wilt diseases, number of pod per plant, plant height,100 seed weight, seed yield. The results of combined analysis of variance for sowing date showed that autuman planting had significant higher productivity than spring planting at 10% level of probability. Higher productivity in autumn planting in comparison to spring planting is due to higher water use efficiency in autumn planting. A significant difference was also found among the genotypes at 5% level of probability, and genotypes ILL 6037 and FLIP 92-12L produced the significant higher yield than local check. Also the result of economic survey showed that new method (Research recommendation) had higher benefit income over conventional method.
