Comparison of fibers and follicle characteristics of afshari-romney crossbreed with afshari sheep breed

This research was conducted to compare fiber and follicle characteristics of afshari sheep with Afshari-Romney crossbreds. Respectively 18 and 32 heads of one year old Afshari and Afshari-Romney crossbreds were used. Wool and skin samples were taken from the left and right midside area of all sheep respectively. Completely randomized design (CRD) to analyze the data. Staple length and percent of true fibers were significantly higher in Afshari-Romney crossbreed than Afshari sheep. Mean fibre diameter, diameter coefficient variation and wool efficiency in Afshari-Romney crossbreds were significantly lower than Afshari sheep. Percent of kemp and medulated fibers in Afshari-Romney crossbreds were significantly lower than Afshari sheep. Follicle ratio, primary follicle density, secondary follicle density and total follicle density in Afshari-romney crossbreds were significantly higher than Afshari sheep. Percentage of inactive secondary follicle in Afshari-Romney crossbreds was significantly lower than Afshari sheep. In general it can be concluded that crossbreeding between Afshari and Romney breeds improved fiber and follicle characteristics in the progenies
