Since the application of synthetic chemical pesticides in the farms and gardens is not the only suitable solution to control plant pests and cause problems such as widespread environmental pollution, insect resistance to some pesticides, outbreak of pests through destroying natural enemies and creation of pesticides residues to the man as the final consumer, to solve problems, therefore, low risk pest control methods must be used. Due to biological active ingredients, plants have advanced defensive system against pests and diseases. Botanical pesticides are plant derived natural products which belong to group of so called secondary metabolites or allelochemicals. Plants containing secondary metabolites are a source of valuable allelochemicals which have insecticidal, antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and insect repellent properties. As natural products, plant based insecticides are biodegradable and environmentally safer than the synthetic pesticides. Taking advantage of biopesticides for their safe use and domestic supply, it could be an important alternative to synthetic chemical pesticides for IPM program in developing countries. Recent achievements in natural pesticides development provide a good opportunity for the utilization of secondary metabolites as a replacement for hazardous chemical pesticides and could be a guarantee for successful IPM programs. Application of appropriate natural pesticides will be a safer alternative in this field. Exploitation and use of natural botanical pesticides can provide jobs, reduce health risks, lower foreign expenditures, reduce environmental contamination and finally lower pesticide residues in agricultural produces.
