Seedling diseases of sugar beet are prevalent in west and north west of Iran. To determine the causal agents of seedling diseases complex of sugar beet, systematic surveys were carried out in the main sugar beet growing areas of Kermanshah and west Azarbaijan provinces from 2002 to 2004 . Infected sugar beet seedling samples were collected from 294 and 351 fields in these provinces respectivly. Disease incidence was assessed by counting the number of plants showing symptoms in up to 100 plants which were randomly chosen in each field. Totally 539 fungal isolates were isolated from infected seedling samples. 34.7% of these were Fusarium spp. and the other isolates were: Pythium aphanidermatum J P. ultimum , Rhizoctonia solani J Phoma betae , Macrophomina phaseolina J Fusarium oxysporum J F. oxysporum popularia , F. culmurum , Fusarium solani , F. avenaceum J Ulocladium sp, Bipolaris sp. J Penicilium sp. , Helmintosporium sp. J Trichoderma sp. , Phytophthora sp., Cladosporium sp. J Geotrichum sp. J Alternaria sp. , Rhizopus sp. And Mycosphaerella sp .. In Kermanshah and west Azarbaijan provinces 64.6% and 62.7% of fields were affected. The incidence of seedling diseases in these provinces ranged from 2-80% and 2-85% respectively.
