The aim of the research was to find out the patterns of the distribution of the character species of xerothermic vegetation in the Zemgale Lowland. 14 small river valleys of the Zemgale Lowland were selected for the research and inspected in summer 2009. For distribution maps of xerothermic vegetation also data from semi-natural grassland data base of Latvian Fund for Nature was used. Xerothermic vegetation was described in 64 sites. The distribution of the indicator species was not even. More species were found in the western and eastern parts, but less in the central part of the Zemgale Lowland. The distribution of the species of the classes Festuco-Brometea and Trifolio-Geranietea in general matched with common distribution of xerothermic species, while the species of the class Koelwrio-Corynephoretea occurred mainly in the western part of the lowland. All xerothermic species described in the valleys of the Zemgale Lowland's small rivers can be divided into six groups depending on difference in distribution and occurrence patterns.
