Oregano is a paramount herb of spice- and medicinal plants in Europe, including Latvia. Wild populations of oregano in our country are too insignificant, the plant must be cultivated. It is necessary to use local genetic resources in agrocenosis. Medicinal and aromatic plants working group of the European cooperative programme for plant genetic resources has created the draft descriptor list of oregano. The signs of glandular trichomes are listed in this document. The glandular trichomes serve as a reserve of essential oil. The trichomes are easily exposed with a help of microscope. Thus, it is possible to prognose the content of essential oil. Three Latvian populations of oregano from Vietalva, Cesvaine and Pure were explored. The results showed uneven distribution of glandular trichomes in different parts of plants within one population, as well as among different populations. The average quantity of essential oil varies from 1.9 to 4.4 mg gE-1. This fact explains the diminished content of essential oil in examples. Therefore it is necessary to continue this research in Latvia and to select the clones with a minimum content from 6-7 mg gE-1.
