Prediction/forecasts of crop yields from agro-climatological variable is not well appreciated in Nigeria despite the fact that rain-fed husbandry has remained the most established practice by Nigerian farmers. However, this study attempted an estimation of cocoa pod yields under varying weather conditions. Towards this end, Parvin and Minzer-Zarwitz methods as well as non-parametric tests viz: Krukal Wallis test were used to analyse data obtained from CRIN W11/2 cocoa (experimental) plot of the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN) covering 1985-1995. The result indicated that if that if the weather was (consistently) "ideal", pod yield would have been 145.25% higher than was realised during the period under review. If the weather was (consistently) "un-ideal", pod yield could have been 30.30% lower than was realised during the period. The pod bearing capacity of the trees was found to be a significant factor of the inc idence of black pod in the plot under investigation. In view of these findings, it was advocated that for the realisation of the policy objective of resuscitated agro-allied driven (Nigerian) economy, policy makers and scientists need pay more attention to the influence of weather variables on agricultural production.
