Soil and vegetation characteristics of dry tropical rangelands for predicting pasture regeneration in exclosures [north Queensland]. [Symposium paper].

McIvor J.G. | Gardener C.J.
To predict pasture response to grazing pressure, relationships between soil and vegetation characteristics of pastures grazed to different degrees, and the growth of pastures when grazing was prevented, were studied for 20 pastures near Collinsville, north Queensland. Pasture growth and botanical composition were combined into a single index (site condition value) to provide an estimate of the values of the different pastures. The soil and pasture characteristics were then regressed against the site condition values to determine which characteristics were the best predictors of pasture growth and botanical composition the following year. Basal area of the perennial grasses was the most useful characteristic and explained 84 percent of the variation in site condition values.
