Effect of drought on leaf development and dry matter production of the cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) plant.

Fortnightly measurements of leaf number/plant, leaf area index (LAI), leaf lobe length, apex number/plant, plant and storage root dry matter accumulation of cassava (Manihot esculenta var. Congo Brazzaville) were collected in 1984-1985. Leaf emergence, plant height and leaf senescence were also investigated. Soil water content in the first 50 cm was monitored weekly. Reduced soil water content led to reduced leaf emergence rate, leaf number/plant, the size of the leaves and apex number/plant. It also increased leaf senescence at the base of the canopy when LAI was 4, leading eventually to decreased LAI. Reduction in total plant dry weight during the water stress period was associated with the reduction in leaf area index. Storage root production was less sensitive to water stress than shoot growth.
