Among the numerous anthropic factors which cause desertification, some of them have been evaluated in the Texcoco River Basin, an area located to the East of the Valley of Mexico. The criteria used to evaluate the process of desertification include a diagnosis of the present situation, its speed during the last 29 years, and the inherent hazards associated with it. The specific desertification processes analyzed were: a.-degradation of the vegetative cover, b.-water erosion, c.-salinization, d.-crust formation by silicon oxides, and e.-area under human settlements. Parameters corresponding to each process were evaluated according to the FAO Methodology for Assessment and Mapping of Desertification (1983), enabling us to determine the following facets: light, moderate, severe, and very severe degrees of desertification. Based on the analysis of the effects of applied technology and the influence of peasants in the upper part of the watershed on the velocity of the desertification process, as well as a in the rehabilitation of some portions of the basin, significant conclusions were drawn.
