Inheritance of flag leaf and important spike characters in triticale (X triticosecale wittmack).

Six generation means were utilized to study gene action in flag leaf area, spike area, spike length, and spikelets per spike in triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack). The additive gene effects were significant for all characters in all four crosses. The dominance gene effects were significant for: all the characters in cross TCB 301/TCB 271; flag leaf area, spike area and spikelets per spike in crosses TCB 301/TCB 431 and TCB 301/TCB 355; and flag leaf area, spike area and spike length in cross TCB 301/TCB 525. The additive x additive gene effects were significant for all the characters in all the crosses except TCB 301/TCB 355. The additive x dominance gene effects were significant for: flag leaf area, spike area, and spike length in cross TCB 301/TCB 431; flag leaf area and spike area in cross TCB 301/TCB 355; and spike length and flag leaf area in cross TCB 301/TCB 525. The dominance x dominance gene effects were significant for all characters in all crosses except TCB 301/TCB 525 and for spike area and spike length in cross TCB 301/TCB 525. The contribution of leaf characters like flag leaf and important spike characters as source (sites of photosynthesis nearest to the sink) cannot be over emphasized. An understanding of the genetic basis of inheritance of these characters is essential in a breeding programme for an efficient utilization of the available germplasm in triticale. Very little work has so far been conducted on the inheritance of important leaf and spike characters in this cereal. The present investigation was thus designed to seek such information for flag leaf area, spike length, spike area, and spikelets per spike in triticale.
