During the 1988-1989 season a commercial sowing of sugar (red) beets was carried out in the sector of Quiriquina, about 35 kilometers to the south east of Chillan. A valuation of the damage caused by the larva of Liriomyza huidobrensis on the yield of beets in the weight of the roots as well as the amount of sugar content, and also biological observations were made in order to determine the breeding, dynamics of the insect. In order to obtain the first objective several treatments were established without insects, with leaf miner, other insects excluded, with insects including leaf miner, IANSA treatment. The data of the yield in the root weight as well as the percentage of sugar by the different treatments was obtained in the harvest and subsequent analysis in the investigation laboratory of the IANSA plant Cocharcas, Nuble. The breeding dynamics of the insect was obtained evaluating on the basis of the treatment, witness of the presence of adults and larvas at the time. From the results obtained in the present investigation the conclusion was: 1. The damage caused by the leaf miner larva on the cultivation of beets is not important, that is, on the level in which the pest appeared during the period of study. 2. The maximum activity of the pest on the cultivation was between the months of December and January. 3. In the province of Nuble there were at least 5 generations, not very definitive, of Liriomyza huidobrensis (B1) associated with sugar beets.
