Stamenkovic S. | Damnjanovic V.
Being a polyphagous insect species, Epicometis (=Tropinota) hirta Poda attacks a large number of cultivated crops and weed species. It causes extensive damage in pear and apple orchards. The pest has been registered to attack rye and wheat, but in a lesser degree. In the spring of 1992, the pest's imagoes were seen on wheat spikes at the time of flowering on a limited acreage in the vinicity of Backa Topola, Vojvodina (Yugoslavia). The most heavily infested area of 190 ha had to be treated with Sumition E-50 (2 l/ha) in order to prevent the pest from further spreading. Although the occurrence of the pest on small grains is quite rare in these conditions, it is an indication that Epicometis hirta Poda imagoes are capable of causing extensive damage in wheat.
