The problem of the land assessment for agricultural use in arid zones and the simultaneous need for the protection of the land against degradation is discussed. Examples are given stressing the importance of the water-holding capacity and salinization hazards of the soils in arid zones. The implementation of land classification schemes is suggested in order to assess land utilization capacities and limits, so that ecologically adapted farming systems can be applied as well as early countermeasures against soil degradation and desertification.
