The present research on Ca-balance underscores the importance of the sampling technique. The scope was to relate the degree of tipburn in chinese cabbage to the content of Ca in leaf samples as well as assessing the effects of sampling methods. Two series of different selected samples were studied. Both series were based on samples of leaves at stages when disorders are just to develop i.e. leaf lengths from 2 to 10 cm. The difference was, however, that the leaf length and accordingly physiological stage varied more in the first series than in the other (variation in leaf length 2 to 10 cm versus 4 to 7 cm). As to the correlation between tipburn and Ca-content, the series where the samples were taken at the widest range the R2 was 0.05 in comparison to the smallest range where R2 was 0.29. If the degree of tipburn was calculated on the basis of the ratio of K plus Mg and Ca amount it would count for 46 per cent of the variation in tipburn in the plants. The Na-content does not seem to be correlated with the disorder. Using the equivalent masses instead of weightes in the calculations, the correlation coefficients were not improved. To achieve better correlation between the parameters one must truly go even more in detail, for example by cutting out tissue, in this case the rims from the vulnerable leaves.
