Laboratory and field examinations were carried out by lichen Hypogymnia physodes L. The laboratory experiments concerned the toxicity of nitrate salts of metals (Pb, Cu, Zn, Mn, Fe) and copper smelter fly ash. Further the accumulation of heavy metals in lichen thalli, the influence of sodium pyrosulphite (simulating the effect of SO2), the combined acting of sodium pyrosulphite and heavy metals, as well as the influence of particular elements on phytosynthesis and respiration and the content of chlorophylls and phaeophytins in thalli have been examined. The results obtained indicate that the intensity of photosynthesis in transplanted lichen is the most useful method for estimation of environmental contamination. The average 2-month concentration of SO2 calculated on the basis of photosynthesis changes was 0.4 mg/cu. m in the area nearest to copper smelter. Content of chlorophylls and phaeophytins can be regarded as an accessory biotest in estimation of air pollution. The intensity of respiration has shown to be a less sensitive bioindicator.
