An appropriate humus content of the soil is a prerequisite to the achievement of sustainable agricultural practices. An old linear model for the calculation of the soil humus balance has been completed by including some correcting factors for specific soil properties and agricultural practices. The model is validated on three long-term field trials and proves efficient in standard situations. It does, however, not take into account some specific agricultural practices. The evaluation of the humus mineralisation in the case of heavy organic fertilisation is unsatisfactory, as well as the evaluation of the effect of reduced soil tillage practices. The model is also tested on several farms practising integrated production. The humus balance can be calculated for the crop rotation of each field, but also for the crops cultivated in a single year. Several uncertainties may be solved after a short discussion with the farmer. The humus balance model appears to be an efficient tool to evaluate the sustainability of a farm's humus management.
