Effect of citrate in combination with different carbon sources was studied on growth, gum production and nitrogenase activity of a mungbean Rhizobium. The cell yield decreased with increasing concentration of citrate when combined with gluconate, glucose, glycerol and xylose. Combination of citrate up to 20 mM with other sugars caused several fold increase in gum content and nitrogenase activity. Higher citrate (40mM) combination reduced nitrogenase activity as well as gum production.
