In the course of a nation-wide survey it has been found that Hungarian pasteurized milk of 2.8 per cent fat content has an average selenium content of 8.8 microgram/dm3. This can be considered as a medium value when compared to the data of Western Europe, but is very far from those in North America (relative standard deviation: 33.7 per cent). With a view to human and animal health care we are of the opinion that it would be useful to increase the general level of selenium supplement in the fodder of cows. It has also been established that selenium content of milk sold in the eastern part of the country is significantly higher than of that sold in Transdanubia. Determination of selenium content was carried out in piazselenole form prepared of 4.6-dibromo-ortho-phenylene-diamine-hydrochloride, with gas-chromatographic method.
