Morphological and cytological characterization of some ramie (Boehmera nivea Gaud.) accessions.

Twenty-one ramie accessions from the Institute of Plant Breeding [Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines] germplasm collection were studied for morphological characters, cytological behavior and pollen viability. Results of the analyses of variance revealed that highly significant differences among accessions existed for all characters except days to harvest where statistical analysis was not possible. Kashin-shu 2 had the lowest values and Koshin-shu the highest for most characters studied. Histograms were constructed to determine the distribution of accessions for all characters. All characters except LAI [leaf area index], days to harvest, leaf length, petiole length, and angle of insertion exhibited normal to nearly normal distribution. Cytological behavior of most of the accessions was highly normal. The more common abnormalities observed were non-aligned chromosomes at metaphase 1 and 2, leggards and bridges at anaphase 1 and 2, and persistent leggards and micronuclei at telophase 1 and 2. Pollen viability was generally high, indicating that logging chromosomes probably caught up during telophase, as evidenced by the lower frequency of abnormalities at this stage than at anaphase. Using cluster analysis, the accessions were arranged into groups in an attempt to identify possible duplicates. Results of morphological characterization were verified by cytological data. The following accessions may be possible duplicates: Seikeiseishin-shu 5 and Seikeiseishin-shu, Seikeiseishin-shu 3 and Tatsutayama, Kagiseishu and Kawaminami 3, and American and Murikami. It is, however, difficult to say with a high degree of certainty whether they are indeed duplicates since the number of characters studied was limited and only one plant was evaluated for cytological behavior.
