The object of this paper is to point to the very serious problems about the more and more accumulation of nitrates in plants, soil and water, to observe the effect of different factors which cause the accumulation of this toxicant in the environment and to examine the possibilities for their reduction. At the same time, the work is an introduction to the author's investigations into the nitrate content in the ecosystem of the Skadar lake basin which is, from the aspect of agriculture, the most exploitative region in Montenegro (Yugoslavia).
