Wood biomass - as a renewable and environmentally sustainable energy source - has again become an important entry in balance sheets and developmental strategies of all advanced and environmentally conscious societies. In Slovenia as well this source is said to be experiencing a "renaissance" and has an important place in the adopted Strategy of Energy Use and Supply in Slovenia. Due to a discriminating attitude with regard to this energy source up till now our knowledge of its basic indices is highly insufficient. This represents a great hindrance to the planning of the supply and use of energy on different levels and participating of Slovenia in various international projects. The article presents the indices which are important from the quantity, quality and value aspect as well as the general topic regarding the present situation in wood fuel use in Slovenia. The emphasis has been placed to the indices regarding quantity and structure as well as the significance of this source within the energy balance in Slovenia, especially in the so called large scale consumption.
