An INFOrmation system for Research Managers (INFORM) has been developed to provide an integrated set of information on personnel, budgets and research experiments. The research experiments are indexed using keywords which are selected from a set of checklists based on AGROVOC descriptors. A mini thesaurus of descriptors was prepared and tested in Sri Lanka in a study involving a total of 1680 research experiments carried out in 1989. This paper describes some of the products from this exercise and illustrates how keywords can be used as a management tool for planning, priority setting and evaluation in a research system at both national and research institute levels.
