The behaviour of Bosc and Hardenpont pears grown on acidic soil poor in organic matter was studied for three years in a normal fruit store. Among the treatments carried out prior to storage, CaCl2 treatment reduced losses caused by phytopathological diseases both during refrigerated storage /2.5-4 months/ and during marketing /120 hours/, but had no positive effect on fungal diseases or weight loss. Preliminary cooling in water was advantageous in Bosc, as it reduced the extent of flesh discoloration. The three scald inhibitors used in the experiment had no effect on weight loss, but DpA and ethoxyquine reduced damage due to fungal diseases. Lecithin is ineffective againts fungal diseases and none of the inhibitors had any effect on flesh discoloration. For all the treatments tested the 9.9 /Bosc/ - 9.8 /Hardenpont/ kg/cm2 flesh firmness value measured before putting into storage showed a more favourable trend than in the control. The dry matter content in Hardenpont equalled the value prior to storage after 4 months of storage. In Bosc, irrespective of the treatment, the dry matter content increased by 3.5-4 o/o.
