Agroclimatic research conducted in the temperate and semiarid region of Mexico has shown that the main limiting factor in bean production under dry conditions is the precipitation. Eleven morphological and phenological characteristics of 18 bean cultivars were evaluated. The cultivars were grown under dry conditions in 7 environments. The results showed a greater effect of the environmental variance. This was probably due to the variability in the distribution of the precipitation. The interaction cultivar-environment effect was also significant. Of all characteristics studied, the cultivar variance component was only important for the number of days to the beginning of flowering and the thickness of the stem. The presence of a greater environmental variance suggests the possibility to increase the yield through cultural practices that allow a maximum capture and utilization of the rain water. Also an objective that must be considered in a breeding program in this region is to obtain cultivars with a wide adaptation and drought tolerance.
