The nutritive value of rice straw can be improved by an ammoniation process. Experiments were conducted to examine the effect of time, temperature, NH3 level and MC on changes in in vitro dry matter digestibilities (IVDMD) of rice straw. Straw samples with moisture content of 1 % were treated with 0, 2, 4 and 8 % NH3 and moisture content increased to 21 %. The samples were incubated at 30 degrees C and samples from each NH3 level stood for 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks. In another set of experiments, 6 % NH3 treated samples were stored in an oven or incubator at 30, 60 and 90 degrees C for 6, 18, 72 and 168 hours. The IVDMD for all samples were predicted from pepsin solubility method. Results indicated a strong trend towards higher digestibility with increasing levels of NH3 application. IVDMD tended to increase with increasing treatment time, temperature and moisture content.
