Le charbon des inflorescences du mais a notre porte.
1995
Gindrat D.
So far head smut of maize (Sphacelotheca reiliana) has not been observed in Switzerland, although it is present in France, at less than 100 kilometers from the border. This paper presents and illustrates the main symptoms that differentiate head smut from common smut (Ustilago maydis). Since most of the maize seed planted in Switzerland is produced in France, it is recommended to plant seed treated with a fungicide containing carboxin in order to avoid contamination of the soil by seed-borne spores. It is also advised to check maize fields for head smut symptoms about one month after flowering. The levels of resistance to head smut of different maize cultivars contained in the Swiss list of varieties are presented.
