In a relatively short period of time, a significant increase in livestock production has been achieved in Yugoslavia, especially in the socialized sector, due to a general orientation towards a more intensive raising and to the use of a number of zootechnical measures. The increase rate varied from one livestock branch to another. -In the last 20 years, the number of cows and heifers increased at the average annual rate of 3,2%. Meat production increased more rapidly than milk production. -In pig breeding, the number of heads varied notably, resulting in significant variations of meat production. -Poultry had a notable progress. The average rate of growth of production was 6.75%. -In sheep-breeding, however, the reduction of the number of heads showed a long-term tendency. The reduced production of sheep meat was a consequence of the reduced number of sheep and of a low performance. -The intensity of livestock breeding, expressed in the achieved gain per unit of cultivated area, increased too, but it varied among republics and provinces. -The variations in the number of heads (especially in pig-breeding) are almost a regular occurrence, but the number of heads has reached such a level, that it is able to follow the changes of general development conditions very quickly. -The increase of the number of slaughtered animals of all types of livestock, except sheep, is noticed. This trend is not directly related to the achieved rate of growth and the average weight of slaughtered heads. -This study also discusses the purchase of livestock.
