This annual investigation in 1990/91 was conducted on the influence of different varieties of winter barley and winter wheat on the population dynamic of cereal aphids. In addition the susceptibility of the cereal varieties on barley yellow dwarf virus (BYDV) was studied. The investigations were done at the Experimental Station of the Landwirtschaftskammer Rheinland at Koeln/Wahn with ten varieties of winter barley and ten of winter wheat. In both cases varieties which were permitted till 1986 were named "alte Sorten" and the five others permitted on and after 1987 were named "neue Sorten". Plots were 1,2 m wide and 11 m long in a randomised block design with for replications. In each plot numbers of aphids were recorded each weak on 25 randomised tillers and stems respectively. Effects on virus were assessed on two times in spring 1991. In autumn 1990 the aphid infestation of all winter barley varieties ranged between 5 and 21% and the number of aphids per plant was below 0.4. Most recorded aphids were Sitobion avenae (F.) and Rhopalosiphum padi (L.). Rhopalosiphum maidis (FITCH) and Metopolophium dirhodum (Walker) showed very low densities. In spring 1991 first aphids on winter barley and winterwheat occurred in May. The aphid population increased to highest density at growth stage milk ripeness (EC 75). In winter barley the "neue Sorten" showed little more infestation than the "alten Sorten", whereat cv. 'Jana', cv. 'Gundula' showed the highest densities with an average of 18 aphids per plant. In winter wheat the highest densities were observed at cv. 'Okapi' and cv. 'Sperber' with an average of 7.5 and 7.1 aphids per plant respectively. In winter barley 73% M. dirhodum and 27% R. padi were observed, while in winter wheat 16.9% M. dirhodum and 81.8% R. padi were noticed.
