The following has been established by this study: The number of erythrocytes in healthy cows is considerably lower than in those with subclinical and clinically manifested ketosis; Differences in the haemoglobin concentration and the hematocrit values, found in all 3 groups, were insignificant; The number of erythrocytes before delivery is significantly lower in the 1st and 2nd group, while these changes are insignificant in cows with clinically manifested ketosis; None of the red blood count parameters showed significant changes with regard to the season, except for a somewhat smaller number of erythrocytes and lower hematocrit values in cows with ketosis; Changes in the white blood count are not significant with regard to the clinical condition of the animals, except for a reduced number of eosinophil cells in ketotic cows; The leucocyte number is smaller in the summer in all of the groups and it is also smaller after calving. The increase of the neutrophil number is significant, as well as the reduction in the number of eosinophils and lymphocytes in ketotic cows after delivery. The delivery has a significant effect on the red blood count, while maintenance and feeding conditions influence the white blood count.
