Twenty seven (27) open cyclic caracows with normal reproductive organs were selected from a herd and were randomly assigned into 2 treatments. Animals in Treatment 1 received 2 injections of PGF2 alpha 11 days apart while animals in Treatment 2 had the PRID in situ for 11 days. Blood samples were collected 7 days prior to and immediately before PGF2 alpha or PRID treatment. Additional blood samples were collected at days 11, 18, 22 and 25 counted from the start of the treatments. Animals observed in estrus were bled for 10 hours at hourly interval for LH quantification. Rectal palpation to monitor ovarian activities were done 7 days prior to and at the time of the first and second injections of PGF2 alpha and during insertion and after removal of PRID. In the same manner, rectal palpation at 4 hours interval commencing 5 hours after the initiation of estrus were done. Estrus was noted in 91.6 and 85.7% of the caracows treated with PRID and PGF2 alpha, respectively. Of these responders, 100 and 90.0% ovulated for Treatment 1 and 2, respectively. Caracows manifested estrus 48.7 plus or minus 17 hours from removal of PRID and 60.6 plus or minus 13 hours after the last PGF2 alpha treatment. Ovulation occurred at 44.8 plus or minus 9 and 81.6 plus or minus 5.5 hours after PRID and PGF2 alpha treatments, respectively.
