In 1993 a new forest law came into force in Switzerland. Its goals (forest conservation and multi-purpose forest use) and legal instruments correspond more or less to the past and present forestry practice. Although we can look back on more than a hundred years of forestry practice, we know only little about the perceptions and attitudes of the mountain population with regard to forests, the activities of forestry staff, and official forestry policy matters. Such knowledge would, however, be essential for the formulation and efficient implementation of forestry policy programmes in a rapidly changing society. The research project, launched by Switzerland within COST E3, and now carried out at the Section of Forest Policy and Forest Economy of the ETH Zuerich, aims at assessing the attitude of the Swiss mountain population towards forests, forestry, and forestry policy by means of written questionnaires. The replies have been partially evaluated and some of the results are briefly presented in this paper. The final full report of the research project is planned for the end of 1997.
