A preliminary survey on the Gharials, from March 1984 to December 85, has revealed that only seven Gharials exist in the river Padma, mostly concentrated in the areas between Godagari and Charghat, Bangladesh. At these individuals have been directly encountered during the study period. Two adult males and three females were identified and the remaining two could not be sexed. One male and one female were killed by the fishermen when they got entangled in the hooks. The number of individuals now stand at five only.
