L' olmo ciliato (Ulmus laevis Pallas). Un olmo europeo interessante e poco conosciuto [resistente ai funghi e ai parassiti, Toscana].

ITALIANO: Mentre gli olmi indigeni stanno scomparendo dalle alberate e dai parchi di tutta Europa a causa delle grafiosi, una specie originaria dell'Europa centro-orientale sopravvive con poche perdite. Questa specie, l'olmo ciliato (Ulmus laevis), risulta peraltro altamente suscettibile al fungo agente della malattia (Ophiostoma ulmi) quando questi sia inoculato artificialmente. Una ragionevole spiegazione della ridotta sucettibilita' dell'olmo ciliato in natura puo' essere l'esistenza di una scarsa attrattivita' di questa specie nei riguardi degli Scolitidi vettori della malattia, come gia' dimostrato in una prova preliminare. Per questo, per la resistenza alle defogliazioni operate dalla Galerucella luteola e per colmare la carenza di conoscenza esistente in Italia nei riguardi di questa specie, viene fornita una descrizione botanica che pone in risalto le caratteristiche che la differenziano dal nostro olmo campestre presente negli stessi ambienti. L'olmo ciliato non si ibrida con i nostri olmi per cui non ci sono i problemi di identificazione che esistono per gli olmi indigeni.

إنجليزي. Following the devastating epidemics of Dutch elm disease (DED), caused by the fungus Ophiostoma ulmi, the European species of elm are disappearing as grown-up trees and survive as shrubs. In the avenues, squares and parks of Florence and other towns of central and northern Italy many adult elms, which belong to an European species not native of Italy, Ulmus laevis, still survive. But this species proves to be highly susceptible to the disease when the fungus is inoculated. Therefore, the European white elm is supposed to be less attractive, compared to the domestic elm, to the beetles (Scolytus spp.) vectors of the disease, as a preliminary trial has demonstrated. For this and for its resistance to the elm leaf beetle (Galerucella luteola), and because this species is poorly known in Italy, a botanical description is given which stresses the features useful to distinguish it from the native field elm (U. carpinifolia) occurring in the same environment. U. laevis does not hybridize with the other European elms. It is important to recognize U. laevis when carrying out studies on the natural spread of the disease or on the efficiency of the Scolytids as vectors of the disease. Because of the lowered field susceptibility to DED and the present preponderance of small Scolytids, which should be less effective vectors of the disease, the European white elm could be planted in towns with some precautions while waiting for better solutions to the DED problem.
