Results of ploughing depth and the use of different implements on sugar-beet are reported from two trials in the Po valley (Modena and Bologna, Italy). Results show a negative response of sugar-beet to shallow (<10 cm tillage). There were no significant yield differences at ploughing depths of 25, 50, 75 cm on well-structured clay soil with adequate rainfall. However, when these conditions were not present, better yields were obtained at 40-50 cm. Use of the chisel-plough instead of the normal ploughing, resulted in lower yields on poorly structured clay soils.
