Study on the genus Nulumbo Adans. revealed that 6 varieties were in Thailand. They were Buntharik, Pathum, Sattabuth, Sattabongkot, Bua Pekin Khaow and Bua Pekin Chompoo. Their external structures were similar, composed of rhizome, stolon, fibrous root system, suborbicular and peltate leaf, solitary flower with white or pink colored sepals and petals; and numerous stamens. There were both petaloid stamens and petaloid staminodes in Sattabuth and Sattabongkot. Many ovaries (carpels) consisted of many pendulous anatropous carpels with sunked in the enlarged receptacle (torus). The petiole was similar to the peduncle which arose from the same node. Rhizome, stolon, peduncle, petiole and leaf compose of air canals, articulated anastomosing laticifer, scattering vascular bundles which condensed around the air canals. The leaf was epistomatical type with anomocytic stomata. Growth period of seed germination was 3-5 days. After planting, it took 1-3 months to flower and 1-2 months from flowering to seed maturation. The diploid number of 6 varieties was 16.
