The present research was undertaken at the Poultry Farm, Agronomy Department, University of Concepcion, Chillan, Chile, during a period of 15 weeks, between May and August, 1989. The purpose was to evaluate the naked oat (Avena nuda) as substitute of corn in rations for laying hens during the second cycle of production. Three hundred Lohmann hens, distributed in five treatments, with four replicates of fifteen hens each, were used. The statistical design employed corresponded to blocks at random and as treatments were considered the following levels of oat in substitution of corn: 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100%, corresponding to treatments I, II, III, IV and V, respectively. The percentage of laying fluctuated between 76-80%; the feed conversion varied between 1.86-2.00 kg feed per dozen of eggs and eggmass between 53.9-55.9 g/day. No statistical differences were obtained (P> 0.05) upon the feed consumption and weight of eggs. According to the present results it is possible to conclude that naked oat may be used up to 100% as substitute of corn for laying hens during the second cycle of laying, without affecting: the egg production, the feed consumption, the feed conversion, the eggmass, the variation in weight of eggs. The use of naked oat in feeding of laying hens caused a pronounced lack of pigmentation in the yolk of eggs.
