The National Plan for the Improvement of Chilean Crossbred Draft Horses, began in 1984, in order to provide to the small and medium sized surface farmers of the country with a improved heavy draft horse obtained through inbreeding between purebred draft stallions and Chilean crossbreed mares. The present study was designed to describe and to compare the hypometric, typologic and conformational characteristics of the first generation of descendants of purebred draft stallions with those characteristics observed on the Chilean crossbreed draft horse. The withers height, thoracic girth, metacarpal perimeter and the length of the body from the shoulder to the pelvis (the tuber isquadicum) were measured in a sample of 196 Chilean crossbreed horses and 77 horses descending from purebred stallions, and subsequently the anamorphosis index, estimated body weight, corporal index and kilogrametric debit were calculated. The zootechnic conformation was evaluated through the study of a photography in lateral side view of each horse analyzing the principal characteristics of the body conformation. The results demonstrated that the Chilean crossbreed draft horses have low withers height, reduced thoracic and metacarpal perimeter. The typologic and conformational study showed that in this population predominated the light and light heavyweight horses. The analysis of the characteristics of the group of horses descending from purebred draft stallions showed that they have medium withers height, but the principal effects were observed on thoracic girth and metacarpal perimeter which give an appearance of a more musculous and strong draft horse which resemble those characteristics observed in the light heavyweight and heavyweight horses.
