Soil and water in the area of the Experimental Station of Research Institute of Irrigation in Most pri Bratislave, Slovakia, is not contaminated by Cd, Pb, Hg. Irrigation and the way of using manure have no effect on the content of Hg in potatoes. This fact can be attributed to the character of mercury which is in the nature cycle, mainly if it is in the metalic form. The content of Cd and Pb in potato tubers is unfavourably affected by potato growing under irrigation conditions and applications of fertilizers and manure. If the manure is not ripe enough, then there is a process of originating fulvoacids and their complex with Cd and Pb are not as stabile as their complex with huminoacids. These can cause conditions for intake of heavy metals by plant system. To explain this fact, it is necessary to know the forms of Cd, Pb and Hg in soil and their distribution in the whole system of plant (roots, tubers, leaves).
