Evaluacion de cuatro cultivares de frutilla (Fragaria x ananassa Duch.) en las condiciones de cultivo de la localidad de Loyca Bajo, San Pedro.

Two trials were conducted to evaluate the agronomic behavior of four strawberry cultivars to determine the effect of the propagation method and plants'zone of origin on propagation. These trials were carried out with cultivars Pajaro, Chandler, Douglas, and Selva at the Loica Bajo locality, Melipilla, during the 1991/92 season, using "frigo" plants (plants stored below freezing) from three nurseries and field planted in January 1991. Crop management was made considering the conditions and characteristics of the zone's farmers. Parameters of fruit production and quality were evaluated; moreover, the cultivars were agronomically described as to their plant and fruit characteristics. Total yields (ton/ha) obtained for the four cultivars did not show significant differences. However, the Pajaro cultivar showed the greatest proportion of exportable fruit while Douglas presented a greater earliness. In the analysis of the fruit quality parameters, the Pajaro cultivar was found to be superior as to fruit size, weight and shape. The Douglas cultivar showed the least firm fruit and greatest amount of damaged fruit. Moreover, the plants grown by the three studied nurseries did not show significant differences in either fruit yield or quality.
