The competition between maize (Zea mays L.) and Simsia amplexicaulis was studied under field conditions, by three treatments: maize in monospecific, Simsia in monospecific and maize and Simsia in association. Competition with Simsia caused in maize severe losses in the biomass production, leaf area index and net assimilation rate, while no effects were observed on the photosynthetic and transpiration rates. Simsia was also affected by competition with maize, in its dry matter production and its crop growth rate, but this losses were lower than in maize.

Se estudio en campo, la competencia durante todo el ciclo de desarrollo, entre el maiz (Zea mays L.) hibrido H-123 y Simsia amplexicaulis (maleza que reduce severamente el rendimiento de los cultivos) en tres tratamientos: maiz en unicultivo, Simsia en unicultivo, y maiz Simsia en asociacion. La biomasa, indice de area foliar y tasa de asimilacion neta del maiz disminuyeron por la competencia con Simsia, aunque no su tasa fotosintetica ni transpiratoria. Simsia tambien fue afectada por la competencia en su biomasa y su tasa de crecimiento, pero en menor grado que el maiz.
